As Ronsel searches for his letter, he is ambushed by Pappy and members of the Ku Klux Klan and beaten. Jamie looks Pappy in the eye and smothers him with a pillow. Ronsel receives a letter from the German woman with whom he'd been romantically involved during the war. They become aware of each other's difficulties and bond over their war experiences. During the character’s aerial scenes, Morrison contrasts his green color scheme (life) with red (death) and brown (race). Pappy brings Jamie to a barn where the Klan is preparing to kill Ronsel for fathering a child with a white woman. As Henry begins to bury his father, Jamie walks away.
Jamie points a gun at his father in an effort to save his friend and is beaten by members of the Klan. And she also had an astounding amount of personal history to add, I know her grandfather has this life journal, with writing and drawings and such. And, after all that pure truth in the movie, after all that searing idea of America, you really need to end on a hopeful note. Netflix posters are pretty terrible.
When you’re Caucasian, it’s not on you. Jamie tries to fight off the men, but is beaten and restrained, and Pappy forces him to choose Ronsel's punishment for the "crime" of miscegenation, documented by his photo: to lose his eyes, tongue or testicles. In a rebuke to Pappy, Hap recites from the Book of Job, verses 14:2-12. Hap, who serves as the preacher for the local black community, falls while helping to build a small church, breaking a leg and rendering him unable to work.
Resl hugs Ronsel and Ronsel hugs his three-year old son. It’s not a white story, it’s not a black story, it’s a story about how those two races hate and love and need each other. Another juxtaposition shows Hap falling from a roof, breaking his leg. Henry leaves on a trip and tells Jamie to leave the farm before he returns. And I believe that its possible and I don’t think it should be frowned upon, as long as it feels honest. Hap accedes to Henry's request to help with the coffin and says a prayer over the grave. In the end, Ronsel says, he crossed the Atlantic again, not for war, but for love. He yells at Jamie for his drunken behavior and sneers at Laura, claiming she has feelings for Jamie. It is the very reason he got his tongue cut out and if he didn’t fulfill that relationship, it would have felt very non-cinematic and, quite frankly, not satisfying at all. And she was really able to take a lot of that personal history and give the movie some real texture and breathe it into life.Structurally, it was all already there. Meanwhile, back in Mississippi both families live in poverty, at the edge of disaster. Four weeks later, Henry comes to check on Hap, who expects to be back soon, despite how the doctor recommended he take six weeks. When the war ends, Ronsel and Jamie return home and realize that they've changed but the local society hasn't.
And in that book, Hillary [Jordan], she was upset when I told her I was going to change her ending, just alludes to the possibility of what Ronsel could potentially be and where he could potentially go. And I didn’t think that was a satisfying enough ending.And part of that is that I’m a minority, and, quite frankly, there are too many fatherless black children in the world. Ronsel asks why Jamie treats him with respect; Jamie recounts that on a bomber flight a black fighter pilot saved his life.
Later, Ronsel realizes that he lost the letter and photo and runs out to look for it. You also felt a personal connection to Ronsel. Throughout “Mudbound,” Jamie reflects on his war experiences, traumatized by death and haunting memories. In Mississippi Delta farm country, Henry McAllan and his younger brother Jamie dig a grave and struggle to lower their deceased Pappy's coffin into it.
Henry seems uncomfortable asking; Hap hesitates to reply. So, for a white person to write a black voice, that’s just a different direction on the same street.
