A really unique and well-thought take on punch and judy - it was clever how all the links to the show were brought in (many of which I didn't realise at the time). I highly recommend this movie. Genres Comedy, Crime, Drama, Thriller. !Help us support art house cinemas by renting these new, recent and re-released films. An extraordinary look at the lives of a middle-aged couple in the midst of the wife's breast cancer diagnosis. The flick clearly wants to be Judy's story, empowering and unconventional; it ends up relegating her to the sidelines for quite a while, though. Unconscious biases are under the spotlight.

Of course, that lesson predated Spike Jonze by a few hundred years, tracing all the way back to the “Punch and Judy” shows that sprung out of the comedia dell’arte tradition in 16th century Italy before moving north and being perpetuated as a Victorian pastime.How fitting that the most famous story puppets have ever been used to tell — a story that’s basically synonymous with the artform used to tell it — is about a controlling husband who neglects his wife, abuses their baby, and then…Judy: I’d tell a joke about my abusive husband but I only remember the punch line.I watched this movie sitting right next to Jane Campion. A terminally ill mother arranges to bring her family together one last time before she dies. Sadly, the piece never quite seems sure what it wants to be, delivering on the set-up but struggling through the pay-off. All of the characters feature, even the crocodile appears in a dream. Power to Judy. It's also reasonably entertaining, never even threatening to become dull. Charyzmatyczny Punch, niegdyś mistrz lalkarski, dziś jest tylko znawcą tawerny, whisky i kobiet. Very little happens in the middle, particularly with our protagonist, and I found myself just waiting for things to get exciting again.Still, while in need of some extra meat on its bones, Domestic violence, mob rule, miscarriages of justice and religion all given a right good bash on the nose by the supreme Mirrah Foulkes. It doesn't quite connect the way it should and, ultimately, that's what lets it down. Its tone fluctuates wildly; it's unsure if it wants to be humorous or horrific. The elements of the fable appeal to all and the more comically violent and horryfying the better. A group of women hatch a plan to disrupt the 1970 Miss World beauty competition in London. A modern take on Charles Dickens's classic tale of a young orphan who is able to triumph over many obstacles. They earn a living by quite an interesting craft. My wife and I just LOVED this film. A very well made period horror / thriller, really worth a watch, probably more than once. Saw this at the Melbourne International Film Festival. His onstage violence spills into real life and a tragedy occurs, followed by him almost beating Judy to death. Anachronisms abound but it might be set in the 17th Century. 6/10 The quirkiness of this film starts in the town of "Seaside" that is nowhere near the sea, but doesn't really extend much beyond that. It isn't all that engaging, really. People like Mia (Judy) and the Director (Mirrah Foulkes) who believe they champion the cause have chosen to remain silent, despite overwhelming evidence to support Johnny Depp. We get to see the tragic effects of hate and morbid fascination with violence.
